So far this weekend, the movie has made $428.5 million in the US and $571.5 million worldwide.
The previous Mario movie, The Super Mario Bros.
Movie from 2023, made over $1.3 billion. Together, the two Mario films have become one of the most profitable animated film series in Hollywood, earning $2.3 billion globally. They are now in the top ten, joining other big franchises like Inside Out, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar. The most successful animated series is Despicable Me, also from Universal and Illumination, with over $5.64 billion in earnings from six films.
In the US, the Mario movies are the fifth-highest-grossing animated franchise, behind Despicable Me, Shrek, Toy Story, and Inside Out.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie brings back Universal and Illumination, along with Nintendo.
It follows the Mario gang—Luigi, Yoshi, Bowser, and Princess Peach—as they go on a space adventure to save Princess Rosalina, played by Brie Larson, from Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr. Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Glen Powell, and Donald Glover are also part of the voice cast.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate and Universal's Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, is getting closer to the $1 billion mark.
In its seventh weekend, it has earned $888 million worldwide.
