Obsession only dropped 7% in its fourth weekend, making $25.6 million.
That's the best fourth weekend ever for a horror film, and the top fourth weekend for any horror movie. The old record was set by Blair Witch Project in 1999, which dropped 9% and earned $24.2 million in its fourth weekend.
This happened after Obsession became the first film since E.T. in 1982 to rise in its second and third weekends.
When Focus Features bought Obsession at the Toronto International Film Festival for about $15 million, no one expected it to become the top movie for Universal-owned specialty label.
It beat out other big hits like Downton Abbey, Nosferatu, Burn After Reading, and Darkest Hour.
Barker made Obsession on his own for just $750,000 with unknown actors.
Before that, he was known for his horror short The Chair, the found-footage film Milk & Serial, which he put online for free, and his sketch comedy channel That's a Bad Idea, which he ran with partner Dr Cooper Tomlinson. Obsession has made him a top filmmaker and one of Hollywood's most wanted directors.
He has already started working on his next movie, Anything But Ghosts, and is set to direct a The Texas Chainsaw movie for A24.
