China Box Office: ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Tops Final Weekend of 2025

 James Cameron's "Avatar: Fire and Ash" stayed on top at the China box office for the weekend of Dec. 26-28, earning RMB166.4 million ($23.4 million) and bringing its total local earnings to RMB700 million ($98.6 million), according to Artisan Gateway.


Disney's "Zootopia 2" remained in second place, making $15.2 million in its fifth weekend.

 The animated sequel has now earned $558.3 million in China, making it one of the top-grossing films of the year in the market.


Maoyan Movie's new film, "The Fire Raven," opened in third place with $2.8 million.

 Directed and written by Sam Quah, this crime thriller follows a cold case involving the murder of a student in Duma City, with a witness and a police officer getting involved in a larger scheme of corruption and revenge. The film stars Peng Yuchang, Alan Aruna, and Chang Ning.


Romantic drama "Love Is Hard," from NCM Television, was in fourth place with $2.1 million, raising its total to $4 million.

 Written and directed by Dong Xu, this third film in the "Qing Sheng" series explores a marriage troubled by a trust crisis, with complex plans and misunderstandings leading to a highly comedic situation. The cast includes Xiao Yang, Tan Zhuo, Qiao Shan, Chang Yuan, and Zhang Xiaowan.


Rounding out the top five, Dirty Monkeys Studio's "Escape From the Outland" made $1.7 million, bringing its total to $2.7 million.

 Directed by Shen Ao, the film tells the story of a foreign journalist, his wife, and an engineer who are captured by extremists while on an overseas assignment. The cast includes Yang Xiao, Xi Qi, and Simon Yam.


Overall, the China box office made $48.6 million for the weekend.

 The year-to-date total for 2025 has now reached $7.26 billion, which is 23.1% higher than the same period in 2024.
