Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures to Release ‘Attack on Titan: The Last Attack’ in North American Cinemas

Anime streamer Crunchyroll has secured North American and select international theatrical rights to the dark fantasy omnibus film "Attack on Titan: The Last Attack." Crunchyroll announced the news on Thursday at CCXP (formerly Comic-Con Experience) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The company describes the release as "a theatrical experience that brings the final chapters of the acclaimed anime series together in one massive film." 

Crunchyroll is developing the title in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment. The two Sony Group companies have announced that they will release the film in early 2025.

The original anime series premiered in 2014, has four seasons, and will conclude in fall 2023. It has captivated both fans and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, three of the seasons have received a critic score of 100% and an audience score of over 90%. 

As you know, the story of Attack on Titan is set in a world where humanity lives behind giant walls built to protect it from the threat of monsters called Titans. However, their century of peace is shattered by an attack on the city, and a young child, Eren Yeager, loses his mother and vows to take revenge on the Titans. Years after joining the Survey Corps, Eren faces off against formidable foes and eventually acquires special abilities that reveal new truths about the world. 

The Last Attack is produced and animated by Tokyo-based studio Mappa. Character design will be by Kishi Tomohiro, art direction by Nemoto Kuniaki, and main animation director Niinuma Daisuke. 

Crunchyroll and SPE have been increasing theatrical production of top-tier anime titles in recent years, capitalizing on the growing global popularity of the Japanese genre. Other upcoming projects include Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Slayer Infinity Castle, the final installment of the hugely successful anime series, which is set to be released as three films next year.
