Moana 2’ Still Making a Splash on Top as A24’s ‘Y2K’ Opens in Eighth Place at Box Office

"Moana 2" continues to have a strong domestic box office performance.

On its way to $50.8 million for its second weekend of release, the Disney animated sequel brought in an additional $11.7 million on Friday. The movie is predicted to make just under $300 million domestically through Sunday after breaking the previous Thanksgiving box office record last week with $225 million over the five-day holiday period.

Despite receiving mixed reviews, the studio's decision to adapt the project into a theatrical sequel has proven worthwhile. "Moana 2" was initially intended to be a Disney+ series. In the movie, Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho return to their voice parts as the titular Polynesian heroine and the tattooed demigod Maui, respectively.

"Wicked," "Gladiator II," and "Red One" are among the other songs that have remained at the top of domestic charts. On Friday, Universal's "Wicked" earned $9.5 million, placing it in second place. With Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the lead roles, the high-budget version of the popular Broadway musical is expected to gross $32.7 million on its third weekend of release and surpass $318 million domestically.

Paramount's "Gladiator II" gained $3.6 million on Friday, putting it in third place. Through Sunday, the historical epic starring Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Paul Mescal is predicted to struggle to $12.9 million, a 58% decrease from the week before. The movie is expected to earn over $130 million domestically after three weekends of release.

In its fourth weekend of release, "Red One," an action-comedy with a Christmas theme and starring The Rock as Santa's head of security, came in at number four. Considering that the film cost $250 million, the Amazon MGM movie added $1.6 million on Friday and is hoping to surpass $85 domestically.

"Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2," an action movie in Telugu that stars Allu Arjun in the title role, completes the top five. According to competitors, the movie made $1.7 million on its first day of release from 1,245 theaters and is expected to make $5.2 million through Sunday.

A24's "Y2K" made an estimated $910,000 on its first day of release from 2,108 locations, placing it in a far-off eighth place. Kyle Mooney's disaster comedy-horror movie, which stars Rachel Zegler and Jaeden Martell, is an "SNL" alum.
