Austin Butler will play the lead in Lionsgate's new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's "American Psycho," directed by Luca Guadagnino.
Although there had been speculation that Jacob Elordi was being considered for the role of Patrick Bateman, that casting never materialized. One similarity between Elordi and Butler is that they both portrayed quite different Elvis in films directed by Baz Luhrmann ("Elvis") and Sofia Coppola ("Priscilla"), respectively.
The movie, which has a script by Scott Z. Burns ("The Laundromat"), will be a new adaptation of Ellis' book rather than a remake of the 2000 movie.
Christian Bale played the role of Wall Street yuppie and serial killer Patrick Bateman in the 2000 film, which is set in the 1980s. The new adaptation of the book may place more of an emphasis on erotic themes than the original horror satire, according to Guadagnino, who is best known for his works on "Call Me by Your Name," "Challengers," and most recently, "Queer." Guadagnino has also experimented with genre in "Bones and All" and "Suspiria." Butler is slated to play the film's main character, but Guadagnino may have given the Patrick Bateman character a very different interpretation than its previous iteration.
