“Joker: This past weekend, "Folie à Deux" debuted to an estimated $81.1 million, topping the international box office. The film, which is a sequel to 2019's "Joker," only made $40 million domestically, which was a disappointment. The absurd comic book movie has made $121.1 million worldwide.
The issue for Warner Bros., the film's financier, is that "Joker: The production of "Folie à Deux" cost a whopping $200 million. The first "Joker," on the other hand, only had a $65 million budget. In addition, the film has received poor reviews, and audiences appear to agree with critics, giving it a meager "D" CinemaScore. The fees for Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix, who returns as the troubled standup Arthur Fleck, and Lady Gaga, who puts her own spin on Harley Quinn, a favorite from the comics, account for a significant portion of the additional costs.
The movie was shown on 25,788 screens and in 76 different countries. The most notable outcome is "Joker: The UK took in $8 million, Germany took in $6.9 million, Italy took in $5.6 million, Mexico took in $5.5 million, and France took in $5 million for "Folie à Deux." The movie will open in Japan next week before opening in China on October 16.
The original "Joker" was a huge blockbuster that made $335 million domestically and $743 million internationally. It was also hugely profitable. It was the highest-grossing R-rated movie for a while, but that record was broken when "Deadpool & Wolverine" made $1.32 billion worldwide. Phillips said he was done with comic book movies before "Joker 2" divided audiences and critics. It was a lot of fun to play in this kind of sandbox for two movies, but I think we've said what we wanted to say to the world,” he told Variety in August.
