Stephen Ruler's Carrie is getting another variation — this time in series structure.
Based on King's 1974 novel, which has served as the basis for four previous feature films, Amazon MGM Studios is developing a drama. Mike Flanagan (Netflix's The Frightful collection, Specialist Rest) is adjusting the book and will act as showrunner, chief creating with Trevor Macy of Gutsy Pictures. ( Amazon MGM Studios has overall deals with Flanagan and Intrepid.)
Carrie would be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video if it were to proceed.
Flanagan has adjusted a few of Ruler's works previously, most as of late The Existence of Hurl, which won the Crowd Grant at the Toronto Global Film Celebration. He likewise composed the screenplays for The Sparkling continuation Specialist Rest and Gerald's Down (the last option with Jeff Howard). The rights to King's Dark Tower novels also belong to him and Macy.
The project is referred to by Amazon MGM Studios as a "bold and timely reimagining" of the story, which centers on Carrie White, a high school student who has lived her entire life in isolation under the control of a controlling mother. Carrie begins attending a public high school following the sudden death of her father, where she is bullied and discovers she has telekinetic powers.
Chief Brian De Palma broadly adjusted Carrie for a 1976 film featuring Sissy Spacek and Flautist Laurie. The Rage, the sequel: After 23 years, Carrie 2 came out; the book was likewise the source material for a 2002 television film on NBC and a 2013 revamp.
Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher, all Netflix productions, are Flanagan's other television works. In 2022, he changed his overall contract to Amazon MGM Studios.
Intrepid Pictures' development of Carrie will be overseen by Melinda Nishioka.
