John Oliver Has Re-Acquired Russell Crowe’s Iconic Jock Strap

Russell Crowe's jock strap has once again come into John Oliver's possession. This is the third time the host of Last Week Tonight has ended up with the undergarment that Crowe wore in the 2005 movie Cinderella Man.

The story began in 2008 when Oliver bought the item at an auction Crowe hosted called "The Art of the Divorce." Crowe sold over 200 things after he separated from his wife, Danielle Spencer.

After the auction, Crowe told Good Morning Britain that the jock strap was one of the most popular items sold.

He explained it was part of his collection as a joke, based on the character he played in the movie. He said it had become quite famous.

John Oliver and his team bought the jock strap for $7,000 along with other items.

They then donated it to the last Blockbuster Video store in Anchorage, Alaska, to help support the business. The store displayed the item but later closed down in 2018.

Crowe had said he donated the money from the sale to the Australia Zoo, which planned to use it for the "John Oliver Koala Chlamydia Ward."

After the Blockbuster closed, the jock strap returned to Oliver by the end of 2018.

Crowe even appeared in a sketch with the item.

In 2025, the team at Last Week Tonight put the jock strap up for auction again to raise money for public TV and radio.

It sold for $21,000 to an anonymous buyer.

Later in 2024, the jock strap was put up for auction again in August, and it sold for $10,000 to an unknown buyer.

It turned out the buyer was John Oliver and his team.

Oliver shared this news during a segment on the Secret Service on Sunday's Last Week Tonight.

He compared the Secret Service's "zero fail" mission to his show's mission.

He said, "If they fail, it can change the course of history, a level of pressure I truly cannot fathom.

I'm pretty confident the historical legacy of this show will be a few hundred thousand dollars for food banks, a koala chlamydia ward, and whatever the fuck is going on with Russell Crowe's jockstrap right now."

He added, "Because, quick update: After we auctioned the jockstrap off at the end of last year, in aid of public media, it was apparently put up for auction again in August, where, I'm happy to tell you: It sold for $10,000.

And the reason I know that is, of course we fucking bought it back."

Oliver then brought out the undergarment and addressed it directly: "I cannot wait to find out where you're gonna go next."
