Robert Eggers has always made movies that are very serious, with deep themes and strong historical settings.It's almost surprising that he hasn't made a movie based on one of Shakespeare's plays yet.There's one that's kind of like that already — his Norse movie The Northman shares similar themes with Shakespeare's Hamlet.But even so, he hasn't made any direct adaptations of Shakespeare's plays until now.According to THR, Focus Features has won the rights to make a Robert Eggers directed version of Romeo And Juliet, beating out A24, Sony, and Warner Bros.
Eggers is known for his horror movies, like The Witch and The Lighthouse.
You might think he'd choose a more intense Shakespeare play like Titus Andronicus or Macbeth first.But THR reports that Eggers is making a version of Romeo And Juliet with a deal worth almost $80 million.The director is also planning to have the actors speak in Old English, which might mean the story is set in a different time and place than the original 14th century Italy.In fact, Eggers has already done a similar kind of forbidden love story that ends in tragedy with his movie Nosferatu.
Romeo And Juliet is set to be Eggers' next movie after his werewolf horror movie Werwulf, which comes out on New Year's Day 2027.
It's unclear where his other projects, like the Labyrinth sequel and a Christmas Carol movie with Willem Dafoe, stand right now.But we're really curious to see how Eggers will tell this famous story about love and death.Somehow, we think it might not be like Baz Luhrmann's version.
