Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Delivers Record $72M in Previews, Besting ‘Avengers: Endgame’

After a rare mid-summer weekend with no new big movie releases, people are excited to see Tom Holland and Zendaya back on the big screen in Sony Pictures' *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*.

The movie made a huge amount of money on Thursday previews, earning $72 million from 4,300 screens across North America.

This is a new record for the most money made in previews, beating the $60 million that *Avengers: Endgame* made in 2019.*Endgame* went on to make $357.1 million in its first weekend in the US and $1.2 billion worldwide.

Thursday's numbers make *Brand New Day* the biggest preview of the year so far.

Before this, Universal's *The Odyssey* had the highest preview with $17.6 million, followed by *Toy Story 5* at $17.5 million and *Michael* at $12.6 million.Both *Toy Story 5* and *Michael* have passed the billion-dollar mark globally, while *The Odyssey* has already crossed $700 million.

The last Spider-Man movie to come out was *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, which made $50 million in Thursday previews when it opened in December 2021.

It earned $260.1 million in the US and $587.2 million worldwide.At the time, its success seemed unusual because of the return of previous Peter Parkers, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, and the lack of big movies during the pandemic.

This strong start for *Brand New Day* suggests it could make way more than the $195 million domestically and $465 million globally that the studio expected.

Even if it only reaches $195 million in the US, it would be among the top 10 biggest movie openings of all time.The only question now is how high it might go.The movie had a $225 million budget.

Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo also appear in Destin Daniel Cretton's film.

It follows the hero as he lives alone without his loved ones until an invisible enemy finds him.

People have been very pleased with *Brand New Day*, which has a 90% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 98% audience rating.

In a review for *The Hollywood Reporter*, chief film critic David Rooney praised Tom Holland as being his best work yet.

This weekend also has Gregg Araki's *I Want Your Sex*, starring Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman.

The comedy thriller is being released in 700 theaters by Magnolia Pictures after they bought the film in a reported seven-figure deal after it premiered at Sundance.
