It's time to catch 'em all again because Pokémon is returning to the big screen.The popular trading card and video game series is coming back with a new movie called "Pokémon: Wild Card," which will be released worldwide in 2027.The movie was announced during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco.A short teaser also showed a glimpse of the upcoming film, featuring a trading card game player and a ghostly Pokémon named Mimikyu.
The mysterious teaser introduced the trading card player, who is dressed in a yellow hoodie similar to Mimikyu.
Mimikyu is a ghost and fairy type Pokémon introduced in "Sun" and "Moon," the seventh generation games in the Pokémon series.It disguises itself as a Pikachu, the mascot of the Pokémon series, but its real form is hidden beneath the yellow rag it wears.
Katsuhiko Kitada, who has worked on anime films and shows like "The First Slam Dunk," "Attack on Titan," and "Naruto: Shippuden," will direct "Pokémon: Wild Card." Character design is handled by Akemi Hayashi, who has worked on "Banana Fish," "Lazarus," and other anime.
The film will be produced by CloverWorks, the Japanese animation studio behind titles like "Spy X Family" and "Bocchi the Rock."
"Wild Card" is the first Pokémon movie since 2020's "Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle," which was released in Japan and on Netflix worldwide in 2021.
The last Pokémon film to be shown in theaters globally was 2018's "Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us," which had a limited release outside of Japan through Fathom Events.
Next year, the 10th generation of Pokémon titles, "Winds" and "Waves," will also be released.
The Pokémon franchise celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2026.
