Who says toys are old-fashioned?Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 5" is dealing with the fact that kids now prefer playing with technology over dolls, and it's made more than $1 billion worldwide.It's now the highest-earning movie of the year.
The film made $448 million in the US and $573 million internationally, bringing its total to $1.022 billion.
It's the third movie this year to reach the $1 billion mark, following "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" ($1.001 billion) and "Michael" ($1.001 billion).Meanwhile, "The Odyssey," which made $639.6 million in just two weeks, is expected to be the fourth to cross the $1 billion line.And that's before "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," the sequel to 2021's "No Way Home," opens on July 31.
This year is likely to have the most $1 billion movies since the pandemic hit the box office in 2020.
In 2019, nine movies—including "Avengers: Endgame," "The Lion King," "Aladdin," "Joker," "Spider-Man: Far From Home," and "Captain Marvel"—made over $1 billion.In 2020, due to theater closures from the pandemic, no movie reached that mark.In 2021, only "Spider-Man: No Way Home" did.Then, in 2022, there were three movies: "Avatar: The Way of Water," "Top Gun: Maverick," and "Jurassic World Dominion." 2023 had two: "Barbie" and "The Super Mario Bros.Movie." In 2024, three movies—“Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and “Moana 2”—crossed $1 billion.And in 2025, three more are expected: “Zootopia 2,” “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” and “Lilo & Stitch.”
Soon, "Toy Story 5" will become the highest-grossing movie in the franchise, surpassing 2019's "Toy Story 4" ($1.07 billion).
It's the third "Toy Story" sequel to pass $1 billion, following 2010's "Toy Story 3" ($1.06 billion).
Directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, the film follows Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), and the rest of the toy crew as their owner, Bonnie, gets more interested in a new gadget—a kids' smart tablet called Lilypad.

Although animated sequels have done well at the box office, original films continue to struggle.Pixar's other 2026 movie, "Hoppers," the story of a student who moves her mind into a robotic beaver so she can talk to animals, opened strongly but didn't match the big box office numbers of previous Pixar hits.
