Sing with me, Muse, about a grand story and a famous filmmaker who are doing really well at the movies.Yes, a whole year after tickets were first made available, director Christopher Nolan’s movie “The Odyssey” is finally here.
This film is based on the ancient Greek story and is the next big project from Nolan, who won the best picture award for “Oppenheimer.” It made a huge $17.6 million from preview showings, which is the best result for any previews this year, even more than the $17.5 million that “Toy Story 5” made.
Experts think “The Odyssey” could make between $90 million and $100 million in its first week at the box office.
That would be Nolan’s biggest movie start since “The Dark Knight Rises” made $160 million in 2012.But the early numbers suggest they might be being too cautious. If it opens higher, it would be the third movie of the year to hit or beat $100 million in its first weekend, along with “Toy Story 5” ($159 million) and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ($131 million).
Nolan’s previous blockbuster, “Oppenheimer,” made $10.5 million in previews when it opened against “Barbie,” creating the “Barbenheimer” trend.
“Oppenheimer” went on to earn $82 million in its opening weekend and stayed in theaters long enough to make $975 million worldwide, thanks to great reviews and the excitement around special formats like Imax and 70mm.“The Odyssey” is the first film made entirely with Imax cameras, and it’s causing a big rush for tickets.Fans are even traveling across states, delaying plans, and attending early morning showings to watch Odysseus’s dangerous journey back to Ithaca.
Since “Oppenheimer” came out, “The Odyssey” has been getting a lot of excitement from fans because it was announced that Nolan would bring the Greek epic to life.
The movie is going to need to stay in theaters a long time because it was a huge investment—$250 million to make it and another $125 million on advertising, making it one of the most expensive movies of the year and the most expensive R-rated film ever.Strong reviews could help—it currently has a 96% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“The Odyssey” has an A-list cast including some of Nolan’s regulars and new talent.
Matt Damon, who was in “Oppenheimer,” plays Odysseus, who faces gods, monsters, and witches as he tries to return home. The cast also features Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and others.
