‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Starts Filming With First Set Footage of Andy Serkis Reviving Iconic Character

Production has officially started on "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," and Warner Bros.has shared the first look of Andy Serkis in his role as the creature obsessed with the ring.

In a short behind-the-scenes video, we get a glimpse of Serkis on the set as he looks through the script and asks a production assistant, "What are we gonna start with?"

The assistant replies, "Uhh, Scene 1, the beginning."

Serkis says, "That's a very good place to start."

Wearing a motion capture suit, Serkis then moves into a spider-like crouch, slouches his shoulders, and curls his lips into the character's famous snarl.

He says, "Action!" The teaser then shows a drone shot of New Zealand's rugged mountains, where filming is currently taking place.

Serkis is not only acting in the film but also directing it.

He is reprising his role as Gollum, also known as Sméagol. The movie is set to release in theaters on December 17, 2027.

"The Hunt for Gollum" brings Serkis back together with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the creators of the original "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" series.

The cast also includes the return of Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, and Lee Pace as King Thranduil.New actors joining the cast are Kate Winslet as Marigol, Jamie Dornan as Strider, Leo Woodall as Halvard, and Anya Taylor-Joy as an elf.

Serkis recently told Variety that working with his Middle-earth family again is amazing.

He said, "It couldn't be better. And it's not just those guys who I adore and love and have worked with for so many years, but the entire crew, practically from 25 years ago.So it's great. And there are generations of their kids too.So it is a big family affair."
