In a short behind-the-scenes video, we see Serkis on the set, looking through the script and asking a production assistant, “What are we gonna start with?”
The assistant replies, “Uhh, Scene 1, the beginning.”
Serkis says, “That’s a very good place to start.”
Wearing a motion capture suit, he then crouches down like a spider, hunches his shoulders, and curls his lips into the famous feral snarl of Gollum.
He says, “Action!” The video then shows a drone shot of the rugged mountains in New Zealand where the movie is being made.
Serkis is doing two jobs on the film—directing it and also acting as Gollum, also called Sméagol.
The movie is set to come out in theaters on December 17, 2027.
"The Hunt for Gollum" brings Serkis back together with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, who were part of the original Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogy.
The cast also includes returning actors like Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, and Lee Pace as King Thranduil.New additions to the cast are Kate Winslet as Marigol, Jamie Dornan as Strider, Leo Woodall as Halvard, and Anya Taylor-Joy as an elf.
Serkis recently told Variety that working with his Middle-earth family again is amazing.
He said, “It couldn’t be better. And it’s not just those guys who obviously I adore and love and have spent so many years working with, but the entire crew, practically from 25 years ago.So it’s great. And there are generations of their kids too.So it is a big family affair.”
