Together’ Filmmaker Michael Shanks Teams with Adam McKay for Mystery Sci-Fi Comedy

Michael Shanks, the filmmaker behind last year's cult horror hit Together, has joined forces with Adam McKay, a versatile writer, director, and producer known for movies like Vice and Don’t Look Up, for a new mystery project.

Sony Pictures has acquired an untitled sci-fi comedy, which Shanks will write, and McKay is set to direct.

McKay is producing the film with Todd Schulman through their production company, Hyperobject Industries.

Andrew Mittman, who is an executive producer on Wednesday and was part of the team that developed Tim Burton’s remake of the B-movie classic Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman, is also producing the project through his company, 1.21 Pictures.
Kai Dolbashian from 1.21 Pictures will also serve as an executive producer. Mittman and Dolbashian worked with Shanks on Together.

No details about the project have been released yet, but it is described as a sci-fi comedy.

Shanks began his career creating YouTube videos and online shorts before making his feature directorial debut with Together, a unique body horror film that starred Dave Franco and Alison Brie.
The movie premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it generated a lot of interest, and Neon eventually acquired it for $17 million.

His next project is a sci-fi thriller called Hotel, Hotel, Hotel, Hotel, set up at A24.
The script he wrote was on the 2021 Black List. This is the first time Shanks has worked with McKay and Schulman, who are among the producers of Hotel.

McKay’s work spans a range of genres, from comedies like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Talladega Nights to dramas like The Big Short and Vice, as well as episodes of Succession and Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.
His most recent film, Don’t Look Up, was a satirical comedy that became one of Netflix's most-watched movies in 2021.

Hyperobject Industries is currently working on several projects, including a mini-series focused on Jeffrey Epstein, based on the book Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story by Julie K. Brown.
Laura Dern has signed on to star in this project.

Shanks is represented by WME, Untitled, and attorney Chris Abramson.
McKay is represented by CAA and Johnson Shapiro.
