"Project Hail Mary" from Amazon MGM Studios also did well in its fifth weekend, earning $20.5 million and coming in second.
This brings its total domestic earnings to $285.1 million. However, the strong performances of "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" and "Project Hail Mary" made it hard for new movies to get a strong start.
"Lee Cronin's The Mummy" came in third in its opening weekend, making $13.5 million.
The movie from Warner Bros. and New Line had a low budget of $22 million, but that's nothing compared to the $150 million earned by Cronin’s 2023 film "Evil Dead Rise." The Mummy was produced by horror legends James Wan and Jason Blum through their companies, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse Productions. It fits into their lineup of monster movies, falling between the well-received "The Invisible Man" (which made $144.5 million globally) and the disappointing "Wolf Man" (which made $35.2 million globally).
The weekend also saw the release of "Normal" from Magnolia, which came in seventh with $2.5 million.
The action film features Bob Odenkirk as a small-town sheriff who uncovers a bigger conspiracy after a local bank robbery. It’s directed by Ben Wheatley, a filmmaker known for his intense, violent films like "Free Fire" and "High Rise."
In its third weekend, A24's relationship comedy "The Drama" took fourth place with $4.8 million.
The indie film, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, has earned $39.7 million so far. That's promising because the two actors will appear together in three films this year, including "Dune: Part Three" and "The Odyssey," though their chemistry alone won't be the key to those movies' success.
Rounding out the top five, Universal's rom-com "You, Me & Tuscany" made $3.8 million, bringing its total to $14.4 million after two weeks in theaters.
In limited release, Focus Features' documentary "Lorne," about "SNL" creator Lorne Michaels, opened with $270,000 from 415 theaters. A24's "Mother Mary" earned $168,063 from just five locations.
