Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, "Project Hail Mary" is a sci-fi comedy about Ryan Gosling, who plays a smart school teacher sent to space to save the Sun from a big problem.
The film had the best opening of 2026, with $140.9 million worldwide, including $60.4 million overseas and $80.5 million in North America. It also beat out the previous best opening for an Amazon MGM movie, which was "Creed III" with $41.8 million overseas and $58 million in the U.S.
"Their Will Kill You," a horror movie, came in third with $2.3 million in North America from 2,778 theaters.
Warner Bros. hopes it will earn around $4.3 million by the weekend's end. The film is directed by Kirill Sokolov, who also wrote the script with Alex Litvak. It stars Zazie Beetz as a house cleaner who finds herself in a high-rise with a dark past. She discovers the tenants are behind the strange stories of missing people. Other actors in the film include Patricia Arquette, Heather Graham, Tom Felton, Myha'la, Paterson Joseph, and Armando Rivera.
Disney and Pixar's "Hoppers" came in second, making $3.2 million on Friday.
It is expected to earn $11 million by Sunday. The animated film is a big investment for Disney and Pixar, costing $150 million, but it's proving to be a good move. Through three weekends, the movie is projected to make $138 million in North America and about double that around the world.
The rest of the top five on Friday were "Reminders of Him" and "Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge."
"Reminders of Him" was in fourth place with $1.5 million in North America. It's expected to make $4.6 million by Sunday, bringing its total to $40.9 million. "Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge" was in fifth place with about $1.36 million in the U.S. The action sequel is expected to earn $4.8 million by Sunday, pushing its total to about $22.8 million.
