Hoover wrote the story for "Reminders of Him," which is about a single mom who comes back home after five years in prison for a big mistake.
People had mixed feelings about the movie, giving it a "B" rating on CinemaScore.
This is part of Hoover's success with movies like "It Ends With Us" and "Regretting You," showing that there's a lot of interest in stories with strong female characters.
Women made up 80% of the people who saw the movie on opening weekend. Her next movie, "Verity," with Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway, will be out in October from Amazon MGM.
An analyst said Hollywood isn't making enough adult romantic movies.
Colleen Hoover's movies are filling that gap.
"Reminders of Him" came in second place behind "Hoppers," a Disney and Pixar animated movie that stayed on top with $28.5 million in its second week.
"Hoppers" is doing well, down just 36% from its first showing. It has made $86 million in the U.S. and $77.9 million overseas, totaling $164.7 million. This is helping Pixar, which hasn't had an original hit since 2017's "Coco."
Meanwhile, "The Bride!"
directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, didn't do as well. It made only $2.1 million in its second week, dropping to sixth place. The movie didn't get good reviews and people didn't like it much. It has made $11.3 million in the U.S. and $21 million worldwide. It's not making money for Warner Bros. which spent a lot on producing and advertising it.
Third place went to "Undertone," a horror movie from A24.
It made $9.3 million from 2,570 theaters on its first day. That's a strong start, especially for a low-budget movie. The movie follows a podcast host who finds scary recordings when she moves back to care for her dying mom. People gave it a "C" rating, which is common for horror movies.
A box office expert said "Undertone" shows the kind of fresh horror stories that make the genre interesting.
Another horror movie, "Scream 7," made $8.3 million in its third week.
Despite mixed reviews, it has made $107 million in the U.S. and $176.9 million globally. It's now the highest-grossing "Scream" movie in the series.
This weekend's movie attendance was much higher than last year, but still lower than before the pandemic.
Movie theaters are expected to get a big boost when "Project Hail Mary," a space adventure starring Ryan Gosling, comes out in March. Then Universal's "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" in April will also bring more people to the theaters.
