‘Stranger Things 5’ Hits 34.5 Million Views After Volume 2 Drops, Helping Netflix to Its Best Christmas Viewership Ever

The second season of "Stranger Things" led the way, according to Netflix, which boasts that it achieved its biggest Christmas Day viewing ever this year.

Thanks to the release of three new episodes, "Stranger Things" Season 5 was the most watched title of the day globally, even if an exact viewership figure for December 25 was not given. This total would also include Netflix's two NFL games and other holiday viewing. During the week of December 22–28, Season 5 received 34.5 million views thanks to those episodes. After its launch with 59.6 million views in November—Netflix's best-ever opening week for an English-language title—that is the second-best weekly total for the season.

According to a study, 8% of this year's top-grossing directors are women, a sharp decline from 2024.

The 59.6 million-hour debut following Thanksgiving was calculated by dividing the total number of viewing hours by the runtime of the first four episodes, whereas this week's 34.5 million views were calculated using all seven available episodes. It should be noted that Netflix does not separate viewership of each volume when reporting the Top 10.

As a result, it is impossible to determine whether Volume 1 or Volume 2 had a larger debut.

"Stranger Things" Season 5 has one more episode. On New Year's Eve, Netflix will make an unexpected move by releasing the series finale simultaneously on the streaming service and in cinemas.

Given the new show is impressive performance thus far, it is reasonable to assume that "Stranger Things" Season 5 will soon rank among Netflix's most popular English-language TV series ever. Given the impending finale, the season is not yet eligible for that list; nevertheless, the 91-day clock will start on December 31 and allow it to accumulate viewership that goes toward the ranking.

Naturally, "The Great Flood," the South Korean movie that topped the non-English-language movies ranking, was not far behind "Stranger Things" as the most watched Netflix title for the week. "Dr. Seuss' The Grinch," which had 16.5 million views at the top of the English-language film ranking, was also noteworthy.

Returning to the English-language TV chart, Season 5 of "Emily in Paris" ranked No. 2 with 13.3 million views in its second week. The Dave Chappelle special "The Unstoppable" came in second with 9.2 million views. With 7.8 million views in its third week, "Man Vs. Baby" ranked No. 4.

Previous seasons of "Stranger Things" occupied a large portion of the remaining space on the chart: Season 1 was ranked fifth with 4.8 million views, Season 4 was ranked sixth with 4.1 million, and Seasons 3 and 2 were ranked eighth and ninth, respectively, with 3.6 million views.

With 3.7 million views in its fourth week, "Sean Combs: The Reckoning" was sandwiched between seasons of "Stranger Things." With 3.2 million views, "Fireplace for Your Home: Crackling Birchwood Fireplace" landed at the bottom of the ranking.
