‘Zootopia 2’ Overtakes ‘Lilo & Stitch’ to Become 2025’s Highest Grossing Movie With $1.13 Billion

Rabbits, foxes, snakes, oh my! "Zootopia 2" is now the top-grossing movie in Hollywood this year. The Disney animated sequel has made over $1.13 billion worldwide in just 20 days, beating the $1.03 billion made by the live-action remake of "Lilo & Stitch." Meanwhile, the non-MPA Chinese animated film "Ne Zha 2" is still the biggest movie of 2025, having made $1.9 billion.

Another big Disney movie, "Avatar: Fire and Ash" by James Cameron, might be a contender for the 2025 title.

The first two "Avatar" films made over $2 billion each. However, the third one opens on December 19 and is expected to make most of its money in the next year.

"Zootopia 2" hit the $1 billion mark in just 17 days, which is the fastest PG film to reach that goal.

It is now the seventh-highest-grossing animated movie of all time, surpassing the original "Zootopia" which made $1.025 billion and last year's "Moana 2" which made $1.06 billion.

Over the weekend, "Zootopia 2" made $131.1 million from 52 countries, bringing its international total to $877 million.

It's on track to become only the second animated movie to cross $1 billion globally, after "Inside Out 2." The movie has been especially popular in China, where it's made $502 million so far. That puts it behind only "Avengers: Endgame" in terms of earnings in the country. This is notable because Chinese audiences haven't been into Hollywood movies in a while.

Another Disney movie, "Ella McCay" directed by James L. Brooks, made poor numbers this weekend with only $300,000 from five countries.

Though not a wide international release, the PG-13 film also did poorly in North America with $2.1 million, which is the worst start for a Disney movie in recent times. Globally, "Ella McCay" has only made $2.4 million from a $35 million budget. With bad reviews and low audience scores, it's unlikely to do better soon. Fortunately, "Avatar: Fire and Ash" is expected to end the year on a high note for Disney.
