Disney's "Fire and Ash" opened with $88 million last week and is expected to make between $75 million and $80 million during the four-day Christmas holiday.
Compared to "Avatar: The Way of Water," which made $29 million on Christmas Day in 2022, this film is behind, but it still has a good chance to do well through the end of the year. The movie cost a lot to make and promote, with production expenses reaching $350 million and promotion costs around $150 million. So far, it has made $153 million in the U.S. and $544 million worldwide.
A24's "Marty Supreme," directed by Josh Safdie, is expected to open above $20 million this holiday season.
It set a record last week by making $875,000 from just six theaters, which was the best per-screen average of the year and ever for A24. The movie is supported by Timothée Chalamet's popularity and some fun promotional activities, like appearing on the Las Vegas Sphere and flying an orange blimp. The film could break A24's record for the biggest opening, which is held by "Warfare," which made $25.7 million. "Marty Supreme" will need good reviews and word of mouth to cover its $70 million budget.
"Marty Supreme" came just short of beating Sony's comedy "Anaconda," starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black, which made $9.1 million on Christmas Day for third place.
"Anaconda" is expected to make $22 million to $24 million this weekend with a budget of $45 million.
Disney's "Zootopia 2" made $5.2 million to land in fourth place.
Focus Features' "Song Sung Blue," which is a new Christmas movie, made $4.4 million on its opening day. The musical, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson in a Neil Diamond cover band, is expected to make $12 million in its opening and has a budget of $30 million. Lionsgate's thriller "The Housemaid," starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney, made $3.5 million.
