Annihilation: ‘Zootopia 2’ Zooms Past the $1 Billion Mark Globally in Only 17 Days Box Office

As everyone in Hollywood worries about the future of going to the movies because of the possible merger between Netflix and Warner Bros., Disney’s popular movie Zootopia 2 shows that people still go to theaters for good reasons.

Disney’s animated sequel crossed the $1 billion mark globally on Friday, just 17 days after it was released.
It’s only the second movie of 2025 to reach that milestone, right behind another big Disney hit, Lilo & Stitch. It also did so faster than any other animated movie from Hollywood or any PG-rated film.

The sequel, which continues the story of a hopeful bunny and a clever fox, ended Thursday with a total of $986.1 million worldwide, including $232.7 million from the US and $753.4 million from international markets.

This is the first time in a row that Disney Animation has had two movies that made over a billion dollars, following last year’s Moana 2.
Since 2013, the studio has had five movies that made over a billion dollars, including films from the Frozen, Moana, and Zootopia series.

Jared Bush, the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, said, “Everyone at Disney Animation poured their heart, soul, and passion into this film to tell a story full of joy, imagination, and deep thought.
This milestone means the world to us because it shows audiences are coming to theaters to share this movie together, from all around the world — and that is a Zootopia dream come true.”

Zootopia 2 opened with a record $559.5 million during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday period, setting a new record for the best opening for an animated movie ever, the best opening of 2025, and the highest opening in Disney’s history for an animated film.

The Thanksgiving movie has also brought people back to watch the original Zootopia, which ended up making $1.03 billion.

Zootopia 2 is expected to do even better as the Christmas season approaches, when kids are looking for fun activities.
The movie market can handle three to four big films in the last two weeks of the year. The biggest upcoming film is Avatar: Fire and Ash.
