Zootopia 2 Races to $10 Million in Previews, Second-Biggest Start for Disney Animation at Box Office

Disney's animated sequel about animals that act like humans made $10.2 million from preview showings on Tuesday.
That amount is the second-highest preview start for Disney Animation, behind 'Moana 2' which made $13.8 million, and ahead of 'Frozen II' which made $8.5 million. 'Zootopia 2' officially opens on Wednesday and is expected to make between $125 million and $150 million during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Even though 'Zootopia 2' is expected to be one of the best debuts for a Thanksgiving release, it will need to beat previous records to overtake the highest total of $139 million for the traditional weekend and $225 million for the five days set by 'Moana 2' in 2024.
Other big earnings during the holiday include Disney's 2019 sequel 'Frozen II' which made $125 million over the five days and 2013's 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' which made $109 million over the five days.

The second 'Zootopia' is ready to do well overseas with expected earnings of $135 million to $145 million over the weekend.
The film opened on Wednesday in China and South Korea with strong results. In China, 'Zootopia 2' had the 10th highest opening day ever for a U.S. release with $33.7 million. It's expected to be one of the few Hollywood movies to do well in China since the pandemic. (The animated series is particularly popular in China after the Shanghai Disneyland theme park opened a Zootopia Land in 2023.) In South Korea, the movie had the fifth-highest animated debut with $1.7 million.

'Zootopia 2' is set to do well thanks to good reviews, strong word-of-mouth and high demand for family-friendly entertainment.
(There hasn't been a family-centered animated movie since 'The Bad Guys 2' in August). Based on projections, 'Zootopia 2' is expected to have the biggest opening for an animated movie since last November's 'Moana 2'. The original 'Zootopia', which opened in March 2016, started with $75 million domestically and eventually made $341 million in North America and $1.02 billion worldwide.

Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, 'Zootopia 2' continues the world of anthropomorphic animals.
The story follows a rabbit police officer and a fox con artist as they team up to investigate a mysterious new reptilian resident. Variety's chief film critic Peter Debruge called 'Zootopia 2' a 'worthy successor,' highlighting the secondary value as social commentary that makes the franchise a must-have.

Elsewhere at the domestic box office, 'Wicked: For Good' was the top grossing film with $15.7 million from 4,115 locations on Tuesday.
Universal's high-budget musical has earned $177 million in North America and $250 million globally after five days. The film, which tells the second half of the Broadway hit, is expected to add at least $80 million over the three-day weekend and more than $100 million between Wednesday and Sunday. Together, 'Wicked: For Good' and 'Zootopia 2' will give movie theaters a lot to celebrate.
