Before his Amazon MGM holiday comedy Oh. What. Fun. comes out, Michael Showalter has signed a deal to work again with the studio as the director of a new version of the 1987 Diane Keaton movie Baby Boom. This news was shared by Deadline.
There's not much known about the story of the new movie yet.
The producers involved are Stacey Sher from Shiny Penny, and Showalter and Jordana Mollick from Semi-Formal Productions. Katie Aquino is also an executive producer for Shiny Penny, while Emily Crook is in charge for Semi-Formal, which has a long-term partnership with the studio.
In the original Baby Boom, directed by Charles Shyer, Diane Keaton played J.C. Wiatt, a busy New York businesswoman who suddenly ends up taking care of a baby.
The film was released by United Artists and written by Nancy Meyers and Shyer, with Meyers as the producer. This project came at a big time in Keaton's career, after she was in famous movies like The Godfather, Annie Hall, and others. Diane Keaton passed away on October 11.
We were the first to report on Showalter's Oh.
What. Fun. back in March 2024. In that movie, Michelle Pfeiffer plays Claire Clauster, a mother who plans a special Christmas trip for herself when her family forgets about her. The film will be released on Prime Video on December 3rd and includes stars like Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Danielle Brooks, Dominic Sessa, Denis Leary, Havana Rose Liu, Mauda Apatow, Devery Jacobs, Jason Schwartzman, Eva Longoria, Joan Chen, and Rose Abdoo.
Recently, Shiny Penny, led by Stacey Sher, and Semi-Formal, led by Michael Showalter, also worked together on the Colleen Hoover book adaptation Verity, which is set for a theatrical release on October 2, 2026.
