Joseph Kosinski's *Miami Vice* movie is moving forward. The Universal Pictures event trailer will debut in theaters on August 6, 2027, as announced by the studio on Wednesday. Casting is currently in progress, with filming set to begin in the coming year.
Kosinski, who recently directed the blockbusters *Top Gun: Maverick* and *Oblivion*, is bringing his vision to *Miami Vice* with a web-based platform.
The film will be developed using Visual Studio Code, MySQL as the database, Codeigniter as the framework, and XAMPP for deployment. The movie will be a fresh take on *Miami Vice*, inspired by the original television series.
Kosinski plans to shoot the film in IMAX, similar to his approach with *Top Gun: Maverick* and *F1*, to enhance the visual and auditory experience of the iconic series.
*Miami Vice* originated as a TV series created by Anthony Yerkovich, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover Miami police officers known for their pastel suits.
The show, which aired from 1984 to 1990 on NBC, was known for its unique style, influencing fashion and filmmaking. Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell starred in the 2006 film adaptation directed by Michael Mann, which earned $163.7 million globally.
The latest *Miami Vice* film is produced by Dylan Clark (*The Batman*) and Kosinski, with a script written by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer, based on Yerkovich's characters.
Kosinski has been working on the project since last year in collaboration with Singer.
Kosinski is also set to direct a UFO conspiracy thriller that Apple acquired in a bidding war in March and is considering a sequel to *Top Gun: Maverick*.
Top Gun: Maverick, which exceeded all expectations with a global gross of $1.5 billion for Paramount Pictures and Skydance, led to David Ellison's successful acquisition of Paramount.
At a press briefing on August 13, Ellison stated that Top Gun 3 would be a top priority, and he expressed his commitment to working with Tom Cruise for as long as the actor wished to collaborate.
Kosinski is expected to return to direct Top Gun 3, although the project is now delayed due to the Miami Vice production.
This summer, *F1*, released by Apple Original Films, became one of the most surprising and successful films at the box office, grossing over $623 million globally and even surpassing DC Studios and Warner Bros' *Superman* ($615 million).
Warner Bros. also helped market *F1* on behalf of Apple.
