Martin Scorsese Sets ‘What Happens At Night’ Next; Leonardo DiCaprio & Jennifer Lawrence Star With Apple In Talks

Martin Scorsese has confirmed his next film project, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence set to lead the cast. The project is an adaptation of the ghost story novel *What Happens at Night*, with production expected to begin in January. Deadline reports that Apple Original Films is currently in talks to finance and produce the film through Studiocanal, which has developed the script.

This follows the release of DiCaprio's *One Battle After Another*, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, which has generated positive reviews and buzz.
Apple is a logical choice for the film, given its previous collaboration with Scorsese on *Killers of the Flower Moon*, as well as its first-look deals with Scorsese's Sikelia and DiCaprio's Appian Way.

Patrick Marber wrote the script for *What Happens at Night* after Studiocanal acquired the rights to Peter Cameron's novel in early 2023.
At that time, Scorsese was only set to produce the adaptation while focusing on potential follow-ups to *Killers of the Flower Moon*.

DiCaprio had previously been considering other projects, including Damien Chazelle's *Evel Knievel* biopic, but ultimately, the pieces fell into place with this project featuring three Oscar winners, including Lawrence.

The film follows a married American couple traveling to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby.
Upon checking into a largely deserted, cavernous hotel, they encounter an enigmatic cast of characters including a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman, and a charismatic faith healer. Nothing is as it seems in this strange, frozen world, and as the couple struggles to claim their baby, they find themselves increasingly unsure of who they are and what their life together means.

Scorsese and DiCaprio previously tackled similar sleight-of-hand storytelling in their adaptation of Dennis Lehane's *Shutter Island*.

Lawrence's recent film *Die, My Love* directed by Lynne Ramsay, and produced by Scorsese, premiered at Cannes, where Mubi acquired the film for a November release.

Stay tuned as the distribution deal is finalized and Scorsese casts the remaining eccentric roles.
