Aquaman star Jason Momoa is staying with DC. The actor will appear in Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow as Lobo, an alien bounty hunter who first appeared in the comics in 1983, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.
Momoa was the face of the Aquaman series under the previous DC administration, making a cameo as Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) before appearing in Justice League (2017) and then starring in 2018's Aquaman. The film was a massive box office hit, grossing $1 billion, and was the culmination of the DCEU film slate that ended last year with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The previous film was a disappointment, grossing just $439 million and being a major flop. Momoa has long wanted to play the character and has been talking about it for years, including during press rounds for The Lost Kingdom. On Monday, the actor shared a quote from that press tour, saying he hopes DC will call him about the role. On Instagram, he captioned the quote, "They called."
Over the years, there have been various attempts to bring Lobo to the big screen. Filmmakers like Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton have also tried, with Dwayne Johnson eyeing Peyton's version of the role. Warner Bros. took over in 2018. Michael Bay also explored the idea, but the concept never really got off the ground. On the small screen, Emmett J. Scanlan played Lobo in the SyFy series Krypton.
Writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen created Lobo for the comic The Omega Men No. 3. The blue-skinned, cigar-chomping alien has supernatural strength and healing powers and has fought both heroes and villains. "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026, with Millie Alcock playing the heroine. The film will be the second installment in the new DC Universe, directed by DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran. Gunn's Superman movie will be released in July.
Momoa's casting is great. When Gunn and Safran took over the DC brand, they left the door open for popular actors from the previous administration to remain on the team, perhaps in other roles. Momoa will be the first to step forward, albeit in a new role. Momoa starred in Justice League alongside Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher.
