Forget about net swinging, it's time for some big game hunting.
Kraven: The Hunter, Sony's latest (and likely final) entry in the Spider-Man villain universe, grossed $2 million in Thursday screenings.
Sony's R-rated supervillain film is unfortunately expected to gross $13 million to $15 million in its opening weekend. A debut of that magnitude would be the lowest opening weekend ever, compared to the Venom trilogy, Morbius and even the widely criticized Madame Web, which opened with $15.3 million earlier this year. Kraven experienced delays and its budget increased from $90 million to $110 million due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Hollywood strikes. "Sergei Kravinoff," directed by J.C. Chandor, stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, best known to Spider-Man fans as the fearsome big-game hunter Kraven. The film chronicles his origins and the complicated relationship with his father and ruthless crime boss Nikolai (Russell Crowe), which set him on the path to becoming the leather-jacketed, muscle-bound villain. The cast also includes Oscar-winning actress Ariana DeBose as Kraven's love interest Calypso; "Gladiator II" villain Fred Hechinger as Kraven's half-brother, the master of disguise Chameleon; Alessandro Nivola as the thick-skinned crime boss Rhino; and Christopher Abbott as the mercenary alien.
Universal's musical "Wicked" will compete with "Kraven" for second place, and is expected to gross between $18 million and $20 million in its fourth weekend. Warner Bros.' animated "Lord of the Rings" prequel "The Battle of the Rohirrim" also opens this weekend and is expected to gross between $6 million and $7 million. The film grossed $625,000 in previews on Thursday, but Disney's "Moana 2" is expected to make between $25 million and $28 million this weekend, likely keeping it at the top of the box office for a third straight week.
