Directed by co-star Justin Baldoni, It Ends With Us follows the journey of Lily Bloom (Lively) and Lyle Kincaid (Baldoni) as they enter into a romantic relationship. But Lily soon begins to see a shadow in her parents' relationship and to question whether she herself is caught in a similar cycle of abuse and domestic violence. When Lily's first boyfriend, Atlas (Brandon Sklener), reappears, things become even more complicated.
Jenny Slate, Isabella Ferrer, Alex Neustaedter, Kevin McKidd, and Amy Morton complete the cast.
In a positive review for Variety, Owen Gleiberman likened the film to a good soap opera, saying: "You have to remember." And the way this is conveyed is the essence of soap opera, but also very emotionally clever.
The press tour for the film was controversial online, with an apparent feud between Lively and Baldoni, raising questions about whether the pair would work together again. Fans also expressed concern that the film's promotional materials glamorized domestic violence. It remains unclear whether there will be a film adaptation of It Starts With Us, the sequel to Hoover's 2022 best-selling novel.
