Black Panther 3’: Denzel Washington Says Ryan Coogler Is Writing a Part for Him in Sequel

Denzel Washington may have just leaked that early development on Black Panther 3 is underway, but honestly, who could blame him? The actor said Ryan Coogler, who wrote and directed the 2018 Oscar-winning Black Panther and its 2022 sequel Wakanda Forever, will star in the yet-to-be-released third Black Panther film, Marvel announced.

The revelation was made during a conversation with The Today Show Australia, in which Washington, who will next star in Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, said he probably only has a few more roles left in his career. The 69-year-old artist outlined his plans for his next project:

At this point in my career, I'm only interested in working with the best people. "I don't know how many more films I'll be in, but I don't think there will be many. I want to do things I haven't done yet," he said. "I played Othello when I was 22, and now I'm going to play Othello when I'm 70. Then I'll play Hannibal. Then I've talked to Steve McQueen about a film." Then Ryan Coogler is writing me a role in the next Black Panther. After that I'm doing a movie called Othello. After that I'm doing King Lear. Then I'm retired."

Marvel hasn't officially announced that Black Panther 3 is in the works or that Coogler is working on it, but that seems like a foregone conclusion. Despite the tragic death of star Chadwick Boseman, Wakanda Forever grossed more than $850 million worldwide and Coogler remains in high demand.

The filmmaker's next project is a vampire movie starring Michael B. Jordan, in development at Warner Bros. The film, titled Sinners, is set to hit theaters in March 2025. Coogler hasn't said what he plans to do next, but maybe he'll return to Marvel to complete the Black Panther trilogy.

The superhero studio's next slate after this summer's box office blast, Deadpool & Wolverine, is set to have three movies in 2025: Captain America: Brave New World in February, Thunderbolts in May, and Fantastic Four: The First Step in July. Robert Downey Jr. will then return to the military in 2026's Avengers: Doomsday, before showcasing a bevy of superheroes in 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars.
