‘SNL’ Season 50 Premiere Captures 5.3 Million Viewers, Biggest Audience Since 2020

The NBC show "SNL" kicked off its 50th season with the largest premiere audience since 2020.


According to Nielsen live-plus-same-day viewing figures, the NBC premiere of "SNL" Season 5o, which aired on September 28, had a viewership of 5.3 million, surpassing that of "SNL" season premieres for Seasons 47-49. In its first weekend on Peacock, the episode also ranks as the most watched "SNL" episode ever.



When compared to the first post-strike episode of Season 49 of "SNL," which aired to an audience of 4.8 million viewers, the premiere of Season 50 saw a 10.4% increase in viewership.


Alec Baldwin played Donald Trump, Maya Rudolph played Kamala Harris, and Jim Carrey played Joe Biden in "SNL" Season 46, which debuted in 2020 to 7.77 million total viewers.


"SNL" kicks off its fifty-first season with hosts Jean Smart, Ariana Grande, and John Mulaney. Four years later, Rudolph returned as Harris for the cold open of the fifty-first season, along with Dana Carvey as Vice President Joe Biden, Jim Gaffigan as VP candidate Tim Walz, and Andy Samberg as Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff.


The first episode of "SNL" Season 50 featured Jelly Roll as the musical guest and was hosted by "Hacks" star Jean Smart, who recently won her sixth Emmy for her role as Deborah Vance in "Hacks."


Nate Bargatze will host "SNL" once more on October 5 with Coldplay as the musical guest. For subsequent episodes this fall, Ariana Grande, Michael Keaton, and John Mulaney have already been announced as hosts. Stevie Nicks, Billie Eilish, and Chappell Roan have also been previously announced as musical guests.


Last fall, Bargatze hosted an episode of "SNL" that drew 4.9 million viewers. At the time, this was the most viewers for a new episode of the show since December 10, 2022, when "Only Murders in the Building" stars Steve Martin and Martin Short hosted.


Peacock streams "SNL" live and airs at 11:30 p.m. ET/ 8:30 p.m. PT on NBC. On Sunday, February 16, the NBC late-night show will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a live primetime special. “SNL” was created by Lorne Michaels and is produced in association with Broadway Video. Michaels serves as executive producer.
