Smile 2’ Matches Its Predecessor With $23 Million Box Office Opening

There is good news for several films at the box office this weekend, starting with Paramount's "Smile 2," which is expected to match the opening weekend of its predecessor with a $23 million debut from 3,619 theaters after earning $9.4 million on Friday, including $2.5 million from previews from Thursday. This is despite competition from the gory indie darling "Terrifier 3."

“Smile” had a $17 million budget for production and opened with a $22.6 million opening in September two years ago. It went on to gross $109.5 million domestically and $217.4 million worldwide. With a budget of only slightly more than $28 million, Naomi Scott plays a pop star who is doomed by a fatal curse in Smile 2; the film has received favorable reviews, earning a B on CinemaScore and a score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 86% from audiences.

The good news for moviegoers is that none of this has hurt "Terrifier 3," which is still attracting daring audiences willing to tackle Damien Leone's ultraviolent slasher trilogy. In its subsequent end of the week, the Cineverse/Ridiculous Nauseating delivery is set out toward a $9.6 million casing, dropping only 48% from its $18.8 million beginning as it sets out toward an expected two end of the week all out of $36.4 million.

This means that "Terrifier 3" will be one of the top five horror films at the box office this year, despite only spending $2.5 million on production and marketing. All indications point to the film's continued decline ahead of Halloween.

A24/StudioCanal's romantic drama "We Live in Time," starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, also made it into the top five this weekend. It made $1.8 million from 985 theaters and is on track for an industry-estimated $4.3 million opening weekend. The movie has received favorable reviews from critics with scores of 80% and audiences with 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition, Neon's "Anora," which will be released on a limited basis, is anticipated to have an outstanding opening in both New York and Los Angeles. In light of industry gauges, "Anora" is set to procure $650,000 from only six theaters, giving it the best per theater normal of the year at $108,333.
