The Venice Film Festival has a new favorite treat.
On Monday night, the local audience went crazy for the world premiere of *The Spiral*, a silly and exciting Italian horror movie directed by Paolo Strippoli (*The Holy Boy*, *A Classic Horror Story*).
Jasmine Trinca, who has acted in *Saint Laurent* and *The Caiman*, plays Anna, a strict mom who makes a deal with the devil.
The devil appears as Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, who wears a trench coat and smokes a lot of cigarettes. She helps Anna save her daughter, Alice, after a terrible accident. But the deal leads to a series of scary and crazy events that break up the family. Adriano Giannini plays Anna's rich and powerful husband, Walter, and Andrea Genovese plays their son, Tobia.
The movie is full of twists and turns, and it has a lot of over-the-top acting, especially from Valeria Bruni Tedeschi.
Even though it might not be the kind of film that wins the Golden Lion, it really impressed the Venice crowd. People loved it so much they stood up and clapped for more than nine minutes, and the director and actors encouraged them to keep cheering.
Whether the Venice jury, which includes director Maggie Gyllenhaal, will like it is still to be seen.
But in a festival where there hasn't been much fun, *The Spiral* was a refreshing change.
Next, the film will be shown in Toronto during the Midnight Madness section.
Le Pacte, the company handling the international sales, is hopeful about its chances. Because of the movie's big idea, there could also be interest in making a remake.
*The Spiral* will be playing in Italian theaters on October 8, distributed by 01 Distribution.
