Kit Harington is going back to HBO, but this time he will have very light brown hair.The Game of Thrones star has been cast in season two of Harry Potter, according to The Hollywood Reporter.He will play Gilderoy Lockhart, the vain Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.This news is a surprise because it was previously reported that Superman actor Nicholas Hoult would play Lockhart.Hoult reportedly left the project due to scheduling conflicts, as he is currently filming the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow.Deadline was the first to report this news.
Kit Harington has already played Lockhart, as he voiced the character in the Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions of J.K.
Rowling's second book, The Chamber of Secrets.Lockhart is a handsome but self-centered person who is hired at Hogwarts during Harry Potter's second year.He is famous in the wizarding world for his many heroic actions, but later it is revealed that he was lying and took credit for the work of others after erasing parts of their memories.Lockhart was previously played by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film Chamber of Secrets.
HBO gave an early renewal for season two of Harry Potter in May, and the season is expected to start filming this fall.
The show's first season, officially titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, will premiere on December 25.Harington has a long history with HBO, having starred in the three-part historical drama Gunpowder and being a main character in seasons three and four of Industry.
The core cast of the show includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy.
Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner for season one and is executive producing with Mark Mylod, who also directs several episodes.
J.K.Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, as well as David Heyman of Heyday Films, who produced the eight Harry Potter movies, are also involved.Jon Brown, who worked on Succession, is co-showrunner for season two.
