‘Moana’ Struggles With $52 Million Overseas, ‘Toy Story 5’ Powers to $879 Million Globally Box Office

Apparently, the movie "Moana" didn't do well in international markets, making just $52 million in its first week overseas.Disney's latest live-action remake didn't do well either, earning only $43 million in the US and $95 million worldwide. This is a big problem because it cost $250 million to make.Disney had expected to make $75 million overseas and up to $140 million globally.

The top countries for "Moana" were Australia with $5.3 million, France with $5.2 million, and Korea with $3.8 million.

However, it did very poorly in China, bringing in just $1.2 million."Moana" is one of the worst starts for Disney's live-action remakes. It joins "Snow White" from 2025, which also underperformed with $44 million overseas and $87 million worldwide.Experts said "Snow White" failed because it was too old, not having the same appeal now."Moana" may be too new, since the original came out in 2016 and the sequel was released just under two years ago, in late 2024.Nostalgia has helped other remakes like "Lilo & Stitch," "The Lion King," "Aladdin," and "Beauty and the Beast," which all made over $1 billion.A remake of "Tangled" is coming out in 2028.

Thomas Kail directed "Moana," which follows the same story as the original: the daughter of a village chief is chosen by the ocean to save her island.

Catherine Laga’aia plays Moana, and Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui, the demigod who helps her on her journey. While critics weren't happy with the movie, audiences were more forgiving, which could help it through word of mouth. However, "Moana" had to compete with two other family-friendly sequels, "Toy Story 5" and "Minions & Monsters."

"Toy Story 5" did well in its fourth week, making $45 million in 50 countries.

So far, it has made $879.1 million worldwide, including $475.3 million overseas and $403.8 million in the US.It is on track to become the biggest "Toy Story" movie so far, surpassing "Toy Story 4" which made $1.07 billion.

"Minions & Monsters" made $39 million from 79 countries in its second week, which is a 44% drop from its first week.

The movie has made $171 million overseas and $280 million globally so far.Although it might be the lowest-grossing part of the "Despicable Me" series, the movie only cost $85 million to make and is expected to be profitable for Universal.

Another new movie, "Evil Dead Burn," brought in just $13.3 million overseas in its first week and $13.7 million domestically, totaling $27 million worldwide.

It did best in India with $1.5 million, followed by the UK with $1.2 million and Mexico with $1.1 million.Sony is handling international sales, while Warner Bros.is handling the US.Although ticket sales were lower than the previous "Evil Dead" movie, "Evil Dead Rise" from 2023, "Evil Dead Burn" had a modest budget of $20 million and won’t cost too much to make a profit. This is the sixth movie in the "Evil Dead" series, starting with Sam Raimi's 1981 movie "The Evil Dead." A seventh installment, "Evil Dead Wrath," is coming out in 2028.

Also, the movie "Michael" made over $1 billion globally, becoming the second movie of 2026 and the first biopic to reach that milestone.

Universal released "Michael" internationally and also made "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," which was another billion-dollar hit this year.

"From its opening weekend to this historic milestone, Michael resonated with moviegoers worldwide and transcended the screen to become a cultural phenomenon," said Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of Universal Pictures International.

"It has been a distinct privilege to bring this groundbreaking film to international audiences."
