‘Minions & Monsters’ Munches On $14M+ Opening Day, Lands A- CinemaScore – Box Office Update

Illumination/Universal's *Minions & Monsters* opened earlier than expected, making $14.23 million and receiving an A- CinemaScore on Wednesday.

The movie is now available in 69 countries this weekend, with 10 of those releases happening last weekend.

Even though the domestic earnings might slow down for this seventh film in the 16-year-old *Despicable Me* and *Minions* franchise, overseas sales will likely take over. These movies usually make about 60% or more of their total worldwide earnings from international markets. Two of these movies have crossed the $1 billion mark — *Minions* from 2015 and *Despicable Me 3* from 2017 — while three others came very close to $1 billion, including *Minions: The Rise of Gru* (2022), *Despicable Me 2* (2013), and *Despicable Me 4* (2024).

Disney/Pixar's *Toy Story 5* made $7.8 million on Wednesday, down 38% from Tuesday's $12.6 million.

The overall earnings for the movie, directed by Andrew Stanton, are now at $326.6 million.Warner Bros/DC's *Supergirl* came in third with $2.1 million and a six-day total of $46.5 million.

Previously reported, *Minions & Monsters* is expected to make around $13.75 million on its opening day without any previews.

This is the seventh movie in the *Despicable Me* and *Minions* franchise, which has earned over $5.6 billion globally. It's currently the top-grossing movie for the day.

There is still a long holiday weekend ahead, especially since July 4th falls on a Saturday — which has happened before in 2020, 2015, and 2009.

Usually, there's a drop in moviegoers on July 4th due to celebrations, but Friday and Sunday are expected to be strong for a family film like *Minions & Monsters*.

Though *Minions & Monsters* had the fourth-best opening Wednesday for an animated movie in July, behind *Despicable Me 2* ($35 million), *Despicable Me 4* ($27.2 million), and *Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs* (2009, $13.79 million), it has the best review score ever for the 16-year-old franchise, with 90% certified fresh.

The initial estimate for the movie's opening was $80 million, but exhibitors projected between $60 million and $90 million. The film's production cost was $85 million before global marketing and advertising expenses.

*Minions & Monsters* tells the story of Gru's little henchmen in the early days of Hollywood in the 1920s, showing their rise and fall, and their return as movie stars who protect Earth from an alien invasion.

The movie earned over $10 million from 10 international territories last weekend, including France and Belgium.

Disney/Pixar's *Toy Story 5* is in second place for Wednesday, with earnings between $7 million and $8 million, and its total earnings are around $326 million in its second week.

Among 5-day openings during the Independence Day holiday, *Despicable Me 2* holds the record with $143 million, followed by *Despicable Me 4* at $122.6 million.

Also opening on Friday is *Young Washington*, a historical biopic by Angel Studios and Wonder Project, starring Andy Serkis, Mary-Louise Parker, Ben Kingsley, Kelsey Grammer, and William Franklyn-Miller as the Father of Our Country.
