Dutton Ranch’ Star Juan Pablo Raba Has a Wild Theory About [SPOILER]’s Murder: ‘There’s a Lot of Questions to Be Answered’

This post includes spoilers from the ninth episode of "Dutton Ranch," titled "El Padrino," which is now available on Paramount+.

The final episode of the season ends with a shocking event when Rob-Will (played by Jai Courtney) is shot at his front door.
Even though we don’t see who pulls the trigger, it seems very likely that the killer was his adoptive brother, Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba).Joaquin was ordered by his father, Mariano (Raoul Max Trujillo), to carry out the killing in order to take back control of the 10 Petal Ranch.

This event leaves Rob-Will’s daughter, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind), and his mother, Beulah (Annette Bening), in shock.
It’s also a big turning point for Rip (Cole Hauser) and Beth (Kelly Reilly), who are trying to rescue Carter (Finn Little) from a Mexican cartel.

In a post-finale interview, Raba said he isn’t sure if Joaquin actually shot Rob-Will.

He asked, “Do you think Joaquin killed Rob-Will?” and responded, “I don’t think he did.
If you look at the timing of the scene, Rob-Will says goodbye to Oreana and then about 15 to 20 seconds later, there’s a gunshot and no cut.So whoever did it, they just walked in, opened the door, and shot the guy.Are you telling me that Joaquin did that?He wasn’t drunk or high. And why would he do it because of his dad, someone he clearly has a lot of issues with?I think there are a lot of things we need to figure out.”

Raba also talked about how the season completely changed Joaquin’s character and how he played him.

He said, “He’s completely out of his element.
This guy isn’t a cowboy, he’s not a killer. He’s a college student. His most prized possession is his A&M ring. His education is the one thing no one can take away from him.Now he’s being forced to use a gun, dealing with killers, calling his dad, and he doesn’t want to be like his dad.He wants to be a Texan rancher. He could have made that choice 20 years ago, but he didn’t want to.Everything that’s happening to him is so strange, and now he doesn’t feel like he can control anything. He’s really scared.”

For the next season, Raba said he’s not sure what to expect but is excited to see more of Joaquin’s journey.

He said, “I’m really looking forward to getting a new script and being in it.
One of the most interesting things about Taylor Sheridan’s universe is that there are no good or bad guys — it’s the situations that shape the characters.Could you really say that Rip or Beth are completely good? You still root for them, right? So the question now is, where does Joaquin go from here?I’ve played bad guys, and they all had common reasons: money, drugs, power, revenge.I’ve never played a bad guy who came from heartbreak.

“I think Joaquin’s heartbreak is what led to that phone call,” he continued.
“What changes everything and affects everyone around him is heartbreak. It’s about not belonging. It’s about telling your mom, ‘Hey, I did everything right.Your real son is a real mess, but I did everything right.I went to college, got my degree, cleaned up your messes for years, and I don’t even have my own family. And you’re not giving me this? What is it, my blood? Is it my color? Is it my culture?’ I think this translates really well into what we’re going through right now, not only in the U.S., but around the world. Why won’t you love me?I haven’t done anything wrong.I think it’s a powerful motivation for what’s coming for Joaquin in a future season.I think it’s a beautiful place to start working from.”
