‘Scary Movie’ Makes $7.7 Million in Previews, ‘Masters of the Universe’ at $4.4 Million Box Office

Another scary movie is coming to theaters this weekend, but it might be more funny than scary. The newest horror parody in the "Scary Movie" series from Paramount and Miramax is opening now. It made $7.7 million from previews. Paramount thinks it will make $40 million at the box office, but some people guess it could make between $45 million and $50 million. If a lot of fans of horror movies like "Weapons," "Longlegs," "Sinners," and others come to see how their favorite films are being made fun of, this "Scary Movie" might break the record for the franchise (it would beat the $49.7 million opening of "Scary Movie 4" in 2006). It might also beat last week's top movie, "Backrooms," which is expecting to make $48 million to $50 million in its second weekend.

The Wayans brothers, who directed, wrote, and starred in the first two "Scary Movie" films, are back for the first time since 2001's "Scary Movie 2."
Marlon, Shawn, Keenen Ivory, and Craig Wayans wrote the script, and Marlon and Shawn are returning along with Regina Hall and Anna Faris. It's been 13 years since the last "Scary Movie," and the group is back to make fun of recent horror hits like "Terrifier," "Smile," "Wednesday," "Get Out," and many more. Nothing is off-limits. Miramax spent $30 million to make the movie, so it should do well financially.

Amazon MGM's "Masters of the Universe" is also opening this weekend.
It made $4.4 million in previews. People expect it to make between $30 million and $35 million, and it has a $200 million budget. Nicholas Galitzine plays He-Man, the super-strong prince who returns to Eternia to fight Skeleotor, played by Jared Leto. Directed by Travis Knight, the movie also stars Idris Elba, Camila Mendes, and Alison Brie as Man-at-Arms, Teela, and Evil-Lyn.

Another new movie this weekend is "The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act" from Fathom Entertainment.
It actually had the highest Thursday previews with $7.8 million, beating "Scary Movie." The film is based on a YouTube series and marks Fathom's highest pre-sales ever.
