The idea was first announced with a pilot order back in 2025.
So far, not much about the plot has been shared, except that it's inspired by the classic Mel Brooks-Gene Wilder comedy "Young Frankenstein." As previously mentioned, the show features Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, and Spencer House. Nikki Crawford, Kumail Nanjiani, and Cary Elwes also appeared in the pilot.
Very Young Frankenstein is created by writer Stefani Robinson, who also serves as an executive producer along with Taika Waititi and Garrett Basch.
All three have worked on the popular FX comedy series "What We Do in the Shadows." Waititi also directed the pilot. Mel Brooks, who co-wrote and directed the original film, will be an executive producer, as will Kevin Salter and Michael Gruskoff. Salter is Brooks' producing partner, and Gruskoff was in charge of the original movie. The show is produced by 20th Television.
Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, said, "Very Young Frankenstein blends the spirit of the beloved movie with the inventive, irreverent style that has defined FX comedies.
This is a completely original take on the classic story." He added, "With FX veterans Stefani, Taika, and Garrett, alongside the iconic Mel Brooks, we know fans will have just as much fun watching this series as we're having making it."
Young Frankenstein first came out in 1974 and was well received by both critics and audiences.
It's often considered one of the funniest American films ever made. Gene Wilder played Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, the grandson of Victor Frankenstein. When he inherits his grandfather's estate in Transylvania, Frederick gets interested in continuing his ancestor's work of bringing the dead back to life.
The film also starred Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn, Peter Boyle, and Kenneth Mars.
Gene Hackman made a short appearance as a blind man who meets Frankenstein's monster.
