Matthew Macfadyen, Charlie Hunnam, Daniel Brühl Set for BBC-MGM+ John Le Carré Series

Matthew Macfadyen, Charlie Hunnam, and Daniel Brühl are starring in a new BBC and MGM+ series based on a John le Carré book. The show, called Legacy of Spies, is adapted from the author's popular novel, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, and also includes material from another book, A Legacy of Spies. The show is written by Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram.

The eight-part series will air on BBC One in the UK and MGM+ in the US.

Macfadyen, who has won awards for his acting, plays George Smiley, a top spy. Hunnam, known for his role in Monster, plays Alec Leamas, a British intelligence officer. Brühl, who acted in Rush, is cast as Jens Fielder, an East German spy. Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu, who appeared in The Empress, is cast as Doris Quinz, also known as Agent Tulip.

The story follows George Smiley as he tries to find and defeat his enemy, Karla, a powerful Russian spy, during the Cold War.

The series is set in the UK and in East and West Germany and Czechoslovakia as they were during that time.

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold was very popular when it was first published in 1963 and is still one of le Carré's best-selling books.

The founders of The Ink Factory, Simon and Stephen Cornwell, say this is the biggest and most complete adaptation of le Carré's work they've done so far. They are excited about the cast and the partnership with the BBC and MGM+.

Lindsay Salt, who directs BBC dramas, says this is a dream project for le Carré, adapted by Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram.

She is happy that The Ink Factory, who are experts in this kind of storytelling, are making the series with strong actors like Matthew, Charlie, Devrim, and Daniel. She believes BBC viewers will enjoy it a lot.

Michael Wright, who leads MGM+, says it's a great chance to work with The Ink Factory, the BBC, and the creative team to tell the story of George Smiley.

He says that Legacy of Spies is a perfect example of classic storytelling for today's audience, and they are happy to bring it to the MGM+ audience.

The series is made by The Ink Factory in partnership with Amusement Park Film, and with the support of 127 Wall Productions and Paramount Television Studios.

The executive producers include Stephen Cornwell, who is also the showrunner, Graham Yost, Simon Cornwell, Michele Wolkoff, Malte Grunert, Chris Rice, Steve Clark-Hall, Matthew Macfadyen, Charlie Hunnam, Joe Tsai, and Arthur Wang. Susanne Bier and Mike Lesslie are also executive producers. The BBC has Gaynor Holmes and Nick Lambon as executive producers, and Nick Cornwell as the producer for the John le Carré estate. Sam Costin serves as co-executive producer for The Ink Factory. Fifth Season is handling global sales for the series.
