Avatar: Fire and Ash - Powers to $345 Million Globally, ‘Zootopia 2’ Hops to $1.27 Billion Box Office Collections

James Cameron's sci-fi movie "Avatar: Fire and Ash" made a big splash on the global box office with $345 million, which is a solid start but much lower than the previous movie. To put that into perspective, "Avatar: The Way of Water," which came out in 2022 after many delays, made $435 million in the same time frame.

The first ticket sales for "Avatar 3," made by Disney and 20th Century, include $257 million from international markets and $88 million from the US.

Globally, this is the second-largest opening of 2025, behind another Disney movie, "Zootopia 2," which made $500 million in three days.

"Avatar: Fire and Ash" has a tough time to match the expectations set by the first two movies, which together made over $2 billion worldwide.

Disney spent a huge $350 million to make the movie and around $150 million on advertising, so they need to make a lot of money to justify that big budget.

In the past, "Avatar" movies have been really successful for a long time.

Neither the original "Avatar" in 2009 nor "The Way of Water" had huge first weekends before Christmas, but both stayed popular through the new year. They are among the highest-grossing movies ever, with the first making $2.9 billion and the second making $2.3 billion.

International audiences will be really important for "Avatar 3" to be a big hit.

The first movie made $2.1 billion just from overseas, and the second made $1.65 billion from foreign countries.

David A. Gross, who runs a movie consulting firm, says that the first two movies made over 70% of their money from outside the US.

So far, the international opening for "Fire and Ash" is very strong.

This is led by China, where "Fire and Ash" started a little better than its predecessor with $57.6 million, just a bit more than the $56 million debut of "The Way of Water."

Other top international openings were France with $21.4 million, Germany with $18 million, South Korea with $13.6 million, and the UK with $11.9 million.

"Avatar" movies are known for their amazing visuals, so it's no surprise that people wanted to watch the third movie in the best quality possible.

Formats like Imax and 3D made up 66% of the movie's total earnings. Imax alone brought in $43.6 million globally, which is about 14% of the total earnings from less than 1% of screens. That makes it the biggest opening for Imax in 2025 and the fifth-largest start in the company's history.

Rich Gelfond, CEO of Imax, said, "As James Cameron continues to push the boundaries with Avatar, the strong connection between Imax and this special franchise continues.

Imax brings in a big share of the box office in almost every market worldwide. Avatar films have had a long-lasting appeal like few other franchises, and we look forward to more fans enjoying 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' in big numbers in Imax throughout the holiday season and beyond."

Disney also did well with "Zootopia 2," which made $76.6 million overseas and $91 million worldwide in its fourth week.

The animated sequel has been a big hit internationally, with $990 million so far. It's on track to become only the second animated movie ever (after "Inside Out 2") to pass $1 billion in international sales. Along with $282 million from the US, "Zootopia 2" has made $1.27 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood movie of the year.
