Blumhouse and Universal are behind this new attempt to bring the horror franchise back to life, following their earlier effort with the 2023 movie The Exorcist: Believer, which didn't do so well.
Flanagan wrote the script and is directing and producing the new film, which is not a remake or sequel but is set within the Exorcist universe.
The original Exorcist, based on the novel by William Peter Blatty and directed by William Friedkin, was about a young girl being possessed by demons and the priests who tried to save her.
It was nominated for 10 Oscars. The follow-up movies mostly focused on the girl as an adult, the priests' backstories, or other supernatural cases that the characters from the first movie were involved in.
At the time, David Robinson, chairman and CEO of Exorcist rights holder Morgan Creek, said, "I think his vision for this franchise is going to stun audiences worldwide."
Details on the new take are being kept secret for now.

Flanagan, known for directing Stephen King adaptations like Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game, as well as creating TV shows such as Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, is producing the movie through his Red Room Pictures.
David Robinson is producing for Morgan Creek Entertainment, while Jason Blum and Ryan Turek are serving as producer and executive producer respectively for Blumhouse.
Johansson last starred in Universal's Jurassic World: Rebirth, which made over $868 million worldwide and proved that the studio's long-standing dinosaur movie series still has a strong following with audiences.
