The Predator is hunting at the box office this weekend.
20th Century Studios' "Predator: Badlands," the ninth movie in the series and the first Predator film from Disney to be shown in theaters, made $4.8 million in early showings.
The PG-13 movie, which is a change from the usual R-rated action films in the series, is expected to make between $25 million and $30 million in its opening weekend.
That would make it the second-highest opening for a Predator movie, behind the 2004 crossover "Alien vs. Predator," which made $38 million. It would also beat the openings of the 2010 and 2018 reboots, called "Predators" and "The Predator," which both made about $24 million. With a $105 million budget and marketing costs, Disney is hoping "Badlands" will make a profit after the poor returns from last month’s "Tron: Ares" and "Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere."
For the first time, a Predator is the main character in "Badlands."
Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi plays Dek, an outcast Predator, who meets Thia (Elle Fanning), a broken synthetic from the "Alien" universe, while hunting a dangerous creature on a deadly planet. Both are trying to escape the harsh synth Tessa (also played by Fanning in a dual role) and have to work together to survive. Dan Trachtenberg, who directed the 2022 prequel "Prey" and this summer’s animated movie "Predator: Killer of Killers," both available on Hulu and Disney+, is also directing this film.
"Predator: Badlands" is expected to be the top movie at the box office after a bad month in October.
Other new movies this weekend include Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson’s "Die My Love," the drama "Nuremberg," Sydney Sweeney’s boxing film "Christy," and Amazon MGM’s inspiring true story "Sarah’s Oil," but none of them are expected to make more than $5 million.
