AI Actress Tilly Norwood Condemned by SAG-AFTRA: Tilly ‘Is Not an Actor… It Has No Life Experience to Draw From, No Emotion’

SAG-AFTRA has made a statement criticizing Tilly Norwood, an AI "actress" that has sparked a lot of debate in Hollywood. Tilly was created by Eline Van der Velden, who recently said that several talent agents were interested in working with her. The acting union believes that creativity should always come from humans and is against using artificial performers to replace real actors.

In their statement, SAG-AFTRA said, "Tilly Norwood is not an actor, but a character made by a computer program that learned from the work of many professional performers without their permission or payment.

She has no real life experiences, no emotions, and from what we’ve seen, audiences don’t enjoy watching computer-generated content that lacks the human experience. It doesn’t solve any problem — it actually creates one by using stolen performances to make actors lose their jobs, which harms their livelihoods and reduces the value of human artistry."

The union also warned, "Producers who are part of the union should know they can’t use synthetic performers without following our rules.

They must give notice and negotiate whenever they plan to use AI-created performers."

As more people in the industry have criticized Tilly Norwood, Eline Van der Velden, the creator, defended her work by saying, "Tilly isn’t replacing a human being — she’s a creative work, a piece of art.

She added, "I see AI not as something that replaces people, but as a new tool, like a new paintbrush.

Just as animation, puppets, or CGI opened up new ways to tell stories without taking away from live acting, AI offers another way to imagine and create. I’m an actor myself, and nothing — especially not an AI character — can take away the skill or joy of human performance."

Hollywood stars like Melissa Barrera, Kiersey Clemons, Mara Wilson, and others have publicly criticized Tilly on social media.

On "The View," Whoopi Goldberg questioned whether an AI like Tilly could ever replace a real actor. She said, "You can always tell them from us. We move differently, our faces move differently, our bodies move differently."

During a Variety podcast, Emily Blunt was shown a photo of Tilly Norwood and was shocked and scared.

She said, "Does it disappoint me? I don’t know how to answer that, other than to say how terrifying this is. No, are you serious? That’s an AI? Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary. Come on, agencies, don’t do that. Please stop. Please stop taking away our human connection."
