‘The Diplomat’ Sets Season 3 Release Date as Latest Teaser Sees Keri Russell Warn of “Terribly Flawed” New POTUS

Netflix is sharing more details about the third season of its popular political series, *The Diplomat*. They've released another video preview of the upcoming episodes and shared the release date: October 16.

The new teaser has little dialogue and short scenes, but it includes Keri Russell's character, Kate Wyler, saying, "A terribly flawed woman is now the president, and only we know just how flawed."

The preview also reminds viewers that the former vice president, Grace Penn (played by Allison Janney), who was close to becoming president after the previous president died, is responsible for the British warship attack that started the series.

Kate and her husband Hal (played by Rufus Sewell) found out about this in season two, during a tense conversation where Grace explained her reasoning in the season finale.

In a recent interview with *The Hollywood Reporter*, Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell mentioned that Grace's rise to power means they have a "very powerful enemy."

The preview shows Grace being sworn in as president and introduces Bradley Whitford as new cast member Todd, Grace's husband.

Like his wife, Todd had been mentioned but not seen yet. Early in season one, it was revealed that he had lost part of an NIH grant, causing a scandal that led Rayburn's team to believe Grace might have to step down and that they would need a new vice president, which made them consider Kate for the role.

After a shorter, six-episode second season, *The Diplomat* returns with eight episodes in season three.

Netflix describes it like this: "Ambassador Kate Wyler lives the nightmare of getting what you want. She accused Vice President Grace Penn of planning a terrorist attack and admitted she wants the VP's job. Now the president is dead, Kate's husband Hal might have accidentally killed him, and Grace is the leader of the free world. None of this stops Hal from pushing for Kate to become vice president. Kate is thrust into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, a complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and an uneasy bond with first gentleman Todd Penn."

The teaser shows brief clips of Kate and Hal walking confidently and Kate posing with British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear).

It ends with Hal suggesting a way for Kate to keep an eye on Grace: "You will be in the White House watching what she does all the time."

Rufus Sewell previously hinted that things get even more complicated in season three.

"The end of season two is one thing, but very quickly even more extraordinary things happen," he told THR before the season two premiere. "Allison Janney coming in, the story's direction after what happens at the end of season two gives us some extraordinary moments. It also changes some dynamics that might have been in danger of playing out. It's getting really complex."

*The Diplomat* has already been renewed for a fourth season at Netflix.

Debora Cahn, the show's creator, is the showrunner and executive producer along with Keri Russell, Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie.

The cast also includes Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh, Celia Imrie, Nana Mensah, and Miguel Sandoval.
