The new release date for "Shrek 5" is Far, Far Away.
Universal and DreamWorks Animation have moved the fifth "Shrek" movie from December 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027.
This is the second time the film has been delayed, as it was originally planned for July 2026. The studio didn't mention why the delay is happening, but Universal has had big successes with animated movies during the summer, like the "Despicable Me" series, "How to Train Your Dragon," and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."
On its new release date, "Shrek 5" will come out just a few days after Sony's animated film "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
" Previously, it was set for December 2026, right after Disney's "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Ice Age 6."
As part of this change, Universal has moved up the premiere of Illumination's Untitled Event Film to April 16, 2027, from its original late June date.
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are returning to the magical land of Far, Far Away in their usual roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona.
Zendaya is also joining the cast. "Shrek 5" will be directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, who have worked on previous films in the series.
"Shrek 5" will hit theaters 25 years after the original 2001 animated hit, which changed the story of Happily Ever After as told by a misunderstood ogre and his friends.
"Shrek" was an instant success, earning nearly $500 million worldwide and winning the first-ever Oscar for an animated film. It was followed by three sequels: "Shrek 2" in 2004, "Shrek the Third" in 2007, and "Shrek Forever After" in 2010. The franchise also had two "Puss in Boots" spinoffs.
