Pedro Pascal Eyed to Lead Todd Haynes’ Gay Romance After Joaquin Phoenix’s Abrupt Exit

Pedro Pascal is considering the main role in Todd Haynes' gay romance film De Noche, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie became news last August when Joaquin Phoenix left the lead role just five days before filming was set to start in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Danny Ramirez is set to co-star in the film, which tells the story of a deep gay relationship in the 1930s.

Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler are producing the movie through Killer Films.

Pascal hasn't officially signed on yet, but he has been considered for the part since late last year, and now the news is finally coming out.

Phoenix first brought the project to Haynes and worked on it with the director before deciding not to go through with it.

The actor hasn't said why he left, but a source told THR that the team was "devastated."

Pascal recently worked with Phoenix in Ari Aster's Eddington and also appeared in Materialists and The Fantastic Four: First Steps this summer.

He's set to appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu next year, and he recently won an Emmy nomination for his role in HBO's The Last of Us.

Haynes recently directed Netflix's May December, which starred Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman and was nominated for an Oscar.

His previous films include Far From Heaven, I'm Not There, and Carol, which also starred Rooney Mara, Phoenix's long-time partner. Haynes was also nominated for an Oscar for the screenplay of Far From Heaven in 2002.

Deadline was the first to report on Pascal joining the project.
