Tanya Lapointe has joined Amazon MGM Studios as an executive producer, and Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond movie. As previously mentioned, producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal will be involved.
"007 is linked to some of my earliest movie-going recollections. My father and I grew up watching James Bond movies together, starting with Sean Connery's "Dr. No." I am a huge fan of James Bond. He is hallowed territory to me," Villeneuve remarked. "I want to respect the custom and pave the way for a lot of upcoming missions. This is a tremendous honor and responsibility, but it is also quite thrilling for me. I am so excited to have him back on film with Amy, David, and me. We appreciate Amazon MGM Studios' confidence.
The head of Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, Mike Hopkins, continued, "We are honored that Denis has decided to direct James Bond's next chapter." His body of work speaks for itself; he is a master of cinema. From Blade Runner 2049 to Arrival to the Dune movies, he has produced gripping settings, vibrant images, nuanced characters, and—above all—the engrossing narrative that fans across the world long to see in theaters. One of the best directors of our time is handling James Bond, and we are eager to begin 007's new adventure.
"Denis Villeneuve has loved James Bond films since he was a young lad," Pascal and Heyman stated. Making this film was always his goal, and now it is also ours. We are fortunate to have this exceptional filmmaker at our disposal.
The most recent films directed by renowned, Oscar-nominated French-Canadian Villeneuve were "Dune" and "Dune: Part Two" for Warner Bros.; a third picture, "Dune: Messiah," is currently in development and is scheduled for release in 2026. Villeneuve has demonstrated remarkable ability to revitalize and restructure established IP with the "Dune" saga and Blade Runner 2049. Villeneuve has also directed notable original storylines such as "Arrival," "Sicario," "Prisoners," "Enemy," and "Incendies."
The new movie will be produced by Heyman through Heyday Films and Pascal through Pascal Pictures. Following a historic agreement with veteran producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson that saw them relinquish creative control of the Bond brand to the streaming behemoth, the two formally signed on for the roles in March.
When Amazon paid $8.5 billion to acquire MGM in 2021, the streaming service obtained the distribution rights for the extremely profitable espionage films, but it only held 50% of the franchise and was limited to a supporting role in terms of creative decisions. Then, in February of this year, after years of delays and false starts on a new picture after 2021's "No Time to Die," which marked the end of Daniel Craig's five-feature run as 007, the three entities
In order to protect the intellectual property rights, Wilson, Broccoli, and Amazon MGM established a joint venture, retaining their ownership stakes.
Amazon execs Courtenay Valenti and Sue Kroll hinted that Pascal and Heyman were working on a "fresh, electrifying new chapter" for the property during CinemaCon in April.
On the stage at Caesars Palace, Valenti and Kroll declared, "We are dedicated to honoring the heritage of this iconic character." "They could not be here tonight since they are both in London getting started, but we wanted to thank them for what we believe will be an amazing partnership."
Who will Villeneuve choose to play the martini-drinking superspy, then? Variety put out a list of some deserving candidates.
